ABOUT US
“I had never seen two black women at a hockey game before. So I made it my mission this year to make that happen.

Our Story
Born from a passion to create and sustain safe, welcoming spaces for Black women and girls in ice hockey, Black Girl Hockey Club (BGHC) was founded in 2018 by Renee Hess, who serves as Founder and Executive Director. Since its inception, BGHC has grown into a fully recognized nonprofit organization, driven by a dedicated team of Black women and allies committed to making hockey more inclusive for all marginalized communities. Through a variety of programs and initiatives—including financial assistance, mentorship opportunities, access to free or affordable hockey gear, and community events—BGHC works tirelessly to empower and support Black women and girls in the sport

Mission Statement
Championing inclusion, empowering visibility, and uniting Black women and allies in hockey.
Dedicated to inspiring and nurturing a lifelong passion for hockey––on and off the ice–– within the Black community, particularly among our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends.
To combat the challenges posed by institutional racism, financial gatekeeping, and limited access, BGHC will provide essential resources, education, scholarship, and leadership initiatives to foster growth and participation in hockey––on and off the ice.
Cultivate a vibrant community that champions visibility and celebrates a more inclusive culture within the game, establishing a safe and supportive environment for Black women and their allies.
Vision Statement
BGHC sees a global community filled with Black women and the people who love us, proudly and loudly working together to grow the game and inspire the generations to come, to protect and preserve our culture, and our future.
“We envision…
a world where Black women are fully embraced in the hockey community, where their voices are heard and their contributions acknowledged.
a world when a Black girl can say she plays hockey and isn’t met with a raised eyebrow of confusion, or a young Black kid isn’t shy anymore to say they like the game.
a time when the presence of Black people is normalized and celebrated outside of February.
(like, cmon people…we Black 365, work harder FFS 🙄).
a space where access to opportunities on and off the ice are actually attainable.
a landscape rich with Black youth actively participating and leading in hockey, ensuring that their environment is led by culturally competent coaches and wellness leaders. ”
