Dear BGHC family,

As we all adjust to life under social distancing and self-quarantine due to the Coronavirus pandemic across the world, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support of Black Girl Hockey Club this season.

During the 2019-2020 NHL season, BGHC held 10 meetups, visited 9 arenas, made hundreds of new friends and raised over $5000 in individual donation dollars. We had over 100 tickets donated to BGHC by you as well as various hockey teams, and are looking forward to doing even bigger and better things in the upcoming season. BGHC has officially transitioned to a nonprofit organization and are looking forward to creating some amazing programming for Black women, our friends, families and allies soon. Without your donations, retweets, hoodie purchases and newsletter subscriptions, none of this would have been possible. THANK YOU!!

I met so many incredible Black women who work in hockey, play or are fans of the game at meetups from Los Angeles to Raleigh.  We were able to go on BTS arena tours in Pittsburgh, engage in lively panel discussions in New York, celebrate Hockey Is For Everyone in Brooklyn and meet some very cool Black hockey players in New Jersey. What a ride!

With the support of allies like YOU, Black Girl Hockey Club has plans to work on event programming, diversity and inclusion educational materials, scholarship opportunities and more for the 2020-2021 hockey season. I, for one, could not be more excited for the future and am looking forward to working together with you to better the community we all share.

I know that the world seems like it is changing rapidly. Please, do yourself a favor and take a moment to breathe, to reach out to loved ones and find some peace during these confusing and strange times.

The one thing that will never change is the mission of Black Girl Hockey Club and our commitment to creating a safe space for Black women in hockey culture. Although we cannot know the future, I do know this. So please, find us on social media sharing silly hockey-themed polls or screening a hockey movie on Netflix together some time soon. If you’re so inclined, you can continue to support BGHC monetarily by purchasing gear in our Threadless shop or donating via Paypal or on our website. Any little bit helps and we appreciate all that you can give.

Take care of yourself and others, fam.

Be well,

R. Renee Hess
